If another player gets the Joker, he must pay the five counters to the player who got rid of it. The remainder of the pool is then divided in the usual way. This is a most exasperating game. _=DISCARD HEARTS.=_ This is sometimes called _=Black Jack=_, or _=Black Lady=_. If it is the Jack, it is worth ten hearts; if it is the Queen, it is worth thirteen hearts. After the cards are dealt, each player in turn lays out three cards which he does not want, and the player on his left is obliged to take them, after having discarded himself. No player may look at what he is going to get until he has discarded himself. The Black Jack or Lady holds its rank as a spade when spades are led; but the moment any other suit is led, of which the player is void, he can discard the Black Jack or Lady, just as he would get rid of a heart. If hearts are led and the player has no hearts, he can play the Black Jack or Lady to the trick, as it ranks below the deuce of hearts.

The Hob and Scop are usually three yards apart. The Cot was a button off the waistcoat or trousers, the Twy one off the coat, and, as its name implies, was equal to two Cots. Formerly, when cash was much more rare than now it is amongst boys, these formed their current coin. The game about 1820 seems to have been chiefly one of tossing, and was played with buttons, then common enough. Now, metal buttons being rare, it is played with pieces of brass or copper of any shape. _=Dealing.=_ The cards cut, the banker takes a convenient number of them in his hand, or better, spreads them face downward on the table, and slips off the top card, giving it to the player next him on the right, face down. The next card he gives to the player on his left, and the next to himself. He gives another card to the right, to the left, and to himself, and then the players take them up and examine them. Ten cards must remain in the stock for the last deal. _=Irregularities.=_ After the first card is dealt no bets can be made or changed. The cards must be so held that they shall be at all times in full view of the players. Any card found faced in the pack is thrown in the waste basket. Any card once separated from the pack must be taken.
Other names for this game are Belly Mantie, Billy Blind, Blind Bucky Davy, Blind Harie, Blind Hob, Blind Nerry Mopsey, Blind Palmie, Blind Sim, Buck Hid, Chacke Blynd Man, Hoodle-cum-blind, Hoodman Blind, Hooper s Hide, Jockie Blind Man. (_d_) There is some reason for believing that this game can be traced up to very ancient rites connected with prehistoric worship. The name Billy Blind denoted the person who was blindfolded in the game, as may be seen by an old poem by Lyndsay, quoted by Jamieson: War I ane King I sould richt sone mak reformatioun Farlyeand thairof your grace sould richt sone finde That Preistis sall leid yow lyke are bellye blinde. And also in Clerk s _Advice to Luvaris_: Sum festnit is and ma not flé, Sum led is lyk the belly blynd With luve, war bettir lat it be. [Illustration] It is probable, says Jamieson, that the term is the same as Billy Blynde, said to be the name of a familiar spirit or good genius somewhat similar to the brownie. Professor Child identifies it with Odin, the blind deity. Another name in Scotland is also Blind Harie, which is not the common Christian name Harry, because this was not a name familiar in Scotland. Blind Harie may therefore, Jamieson thinks, arise from the rough or hairy attire worn by the principal actor. Auld Harie is one of the names given to the devil, and also to the spirit Brownie, who is represented as a hairy being. Under Coolin, a curious Highland custom is described by Jamieson, which is singularly like the game of Belly Blind, and assists in the conclusion that the game has descended from a rite where animal gods were represented.

_=7.=_ A ball whose centre is on the string line must be regarded as within the line. _=8.=_ If the player pocket one or more of the object-balls, and his own ball goes into a pocket, or off the table from the stroke, he cannot score for the numbered balls, which must be placed on the spot known as the deep-red spot, or if it be occupied as nearly below it as possible on a line with that spot. AMERICAN PYRAMID POOL. The fifteen balls are numbered from one to fifteen respectively, and are usually colored red, but the numbers on the balls are used simply for convenience in calling the number of each ball which the player intends to pocket and do not in any way affect the score of the player, which is determined by the number of balls pocketed. Scratches pay one ball, which must be placed on the deep red spot. CONTINUOUS POOL. In Continuous Pool, the scoring of the game is continued until all the balls in each frame have been pocketed, and the game may consist of any number of balls or points up which may be agreed upon. Each ball pocketed scores one point for the striker and the game is usually scored upon the string of buttons over the table, as in regular billiards.

Halliwell (_Dictionary_) says this is a northern name for the game of Shake Cap, and Brockett (_North Country Words_) speaks of it as a game much practised among the young pitmen and keelmen. Jingo-ring Here we go by jingo-ring, jingo-ring, jingo-ring, Here we go by jingo-ring, and round by merry-ma-tansy. --Sporle, Norfolk (Miss Matthews). Sung to the Mulberry or Ivy bush tune. The children form a ring and dance round singing. At the last word they all fall down. See Merry-ma-tansa. Jinkie A game among children, in which they run round a table trying to catch one whose business is by quick turns to elude them.
_=PENALTIES.=_ If any player turns out to have less in his deadwood than the caller, as in the example just given, the caller forfeits ten points to him, in addition to having to pay for the difference. Should a player call for a show-down when he has more than ten in his deadwood, he loses five points to each of the others at the table and takes up his cards again. DOUBLE-PACK RUM. _=CARDS.=_ This game is always played with two full packs of fifty-two cards each and two jokers, all shuffled together and used as one. The ace may be high or low in sequences. _=DEALING.=_ Ten cards are given to each player, one at a time, and the next card is turned up and laid beside the stock to start the discard pile. _=LAYING OUT.
